The women and girls of Gaza

Image
THE women and girls of Gaza are suffering unprecedented violence due to Israel’s horrific assaults. They, along with children, make up 70% of the more than 30,000 killed so far. If not killed, they are bombed out of their homes and forced to take refuge wherever possible. And what is it women, specifically pregnant women, need? Access to healthcare and hospitals. But the attacks on hospitals have severely limited this access and, as we have seen, affected those giving birth, and their babies, to an intolerable extent.   It is not only about making it incredibly difficult for these women to give birth in anything remotely resembling a safe environment, but about putting their lives and the lives of the newborns at risk.  We all saw the five babies left to die in the al-Nasr hospital in November when Israeli forces stormed the hospital and ordered patients, doctors and displaced civilians to leave. Doctors were ordered, ordered by IOF soldiers who knew this would be a death sentence fo

CAPTION: Happening here soon - again. Members of a group of Jewish refugees from Czechoslovakia are marched away by police at Croydon airport  on 31 March 1939. The refugees were detained at the police station because their documents were not in order. They were put on a flight to Warsaw but threatened to jump out of the window if the plane took off. The pilot refused to fly, so they were deported the following day. THE BBC is once again providing succour to the Government, and I don’t mean by temporarily removing Gary Lineker from his role as presenter’s of Match of the Day. While most are vociferously defending what Lineker said - and of course it should be defended - they are not talking about the actual Illegal Migration Bill which caused the furore. Most are too busy tweeting in solidarity with Lineker and now Ian Wright and Alan Shearer who have also refused to appear on MOTD, and condemning the BBC, with only a few voices still focused on this horrendous bill. Lineker’s co-pre

I'M NOT going to rant about Starmer’s five ‘missions’ which are so laughable they don’t deserve to be given any attention; or the broken pledges; or welcoming lying Luciana Berger back into the party, or so many other things. What I want to say is that we must not even consider voting Labour. If we do we are telling Starmer that he has done well, that we are happy with the direction of the Party, we would be validating every one of his despicable decisions since becoming leader. He will not change when in power. He has shown us what he is: a lying, authoritarian fraud. He expels people for little to no reason, he changes rules when it suits him - do you really think he would not do this if he became PM? He would, but he would have more power, the power to hurt all of us. Our only hope is for Labour to be demolished at the next GE. Only then will the Party see that they have indeed moved in the wrong direction and that we do indeed have someone else to vote for. (In case you’re wo

SYRIA in the aftermath of an earthquake is targeted by Israel, the latter bombing a residential area in Damascus and killing 15 people. IN THE AFTERMATH OF AN EARTHQUAKE. Where is the international condemnation? Instead of the censure we could have expected had it been any other nation, we have Israeli cheerleaders, the USA, exerting influence to have a UNSC draft resolution condemning illegal Israeli settlement activity dropped. Reuters news agency said today (Monday) that the United Arab Emirates, which had drafted the resolution along with Palestinian Authority officials, had informed the UNSC that the resolution and the vote would be dropped. Other reports have cited diplomatic sources saying the PA agreed to drop pursuit of the vote amid pressure from the US government, which included promises of a financial aid package and a temporary suspension of announcements on new Israeli settlement units and Palestinian home demolitions. Palestinian politician Mustafa Barghouti spoke to A

A THANK YOU NOTE AND A CALL TO ARMS - LET'S CALL TIME ON THE ESTABLISHMENT MANY of you will have seen me asking for help on here through a fundraiser set up by a group of incredibly, incredibly wonderful, kind and generous people. And many of you have donated to the fund for which I am forever grateful. Nobody likes asking for financial help, especially when you're my age and have never done so before. I've always been fiercely independent even when I was going through what I thought were the darkest days of my life after my partner's accident. But I was persuaded to reach out and am very glad I did - not just for the help received, but because of the people I have encountered over these last few months. Wonderful people, socialists. Actually walking the walk and helping when they can. One of them is even flying out from England solely to help me drive the hire van back. Just amazing. And another is providing me with a home. Not all can help. I know. I've had to j

COMING HOME - AND WHY I NEED HELP

Happier days. A few years after Paul's accident.   I’D like to explain why I need help for anyone who may think I have been living on the Costa del Sol or something similar. I haven’t. I have been working (in a town just outside of Murcia city) and living in what can only be described as awful circumstances for a few years now. The first year here I had a contract so things were okay. But then I had to find alternative work - I teach ESL - and the only work going was with an academy where I couldn’t get a contract, so am just paid by the hour and as I’m classed as self-employed I pay my own Social Security which, after the first year when you pay about 80€ a month no matter what you earn, has gone up to 316€ a month which is almost half my wages. I get 8€ an hour and do not get sick pay or holiday pay even when   the academy (as all academies here do) closes down in summer. It wasn’t too bad when I had some extra work and was doing 52 hours a week, but that has been cut an

ONLY THE US HAS THE RIGHT TO INVADE OTHER COUNTRIES DONTCHA KNOW

MITT ROMNEY, yeah that Republican, ex-governor, failed presidential candidate, very active in his church Mitt Romney, has said “Putin’s Ukraine invasion is the first time in 80 years that a great power has moved to conquer a sovereign nation”. Ummm… Nicaragua ? Invaded and occupied by the US in the early part of the twentieth century plus the US meddling in its affairs to ensure a right wing government. Much the same in El Salvador where Reagan was concerned about the civil war and the leftist rebels, despite the government and its military being known for abuses against citizens. And it should be noted that Reagan also held the opinion that the then USSR was behind the rebels in both countries. Make no mistake, the USSR/Russia has forever been the bogeyman of the USA. Putin could give all his citizens free food and housing for five years and the US would see it as a ‘communist plot’. I’m not taking Russia’s side in this, I’m no fan of Putin, but the way the US (and other Western co
